Spring Plant Highlight: Pansies!

Pansies are vibrant, hardy annuals that thrive in cool weather, making them perfect for early spring and fall plantings in many climates. Pansies, known for their "face-like" blooms and vibrant colors, have a rich history and symbolism, including being derived from the French word "pensée" (thought) and being used in Victorian-era love potions. They are also edible and can be used as garnishes or in salads.

To plant pansies, choose a location that receives partial to full sun, ensuring they get at least 4-6 hours of light daily.

To grow and care for pansies, regular watering is essential, but the soil should not be soggy. Water deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry, and avoid overhead watering to prevent diseases. Fertilizing with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer every 4-6 weeks will promote healthy growth and abundant blooms.

Deadheading spent flowers encourages more blooms and keeps the plants looking tidy. Pansies benefit from cooler temperatures, so in hot climates, they may need some afternoon shade to prevent them from wilting or bolting. With proper care, pansies can bloom from early spring through fall, providing a burst of color in your garden or containers.
